Chef Alain Ducasse’s Hong Kong restaurant, Rech, has served its last meal as it closes its doors for good.
The first high-profile closure due to the coronavirus outbreak, the restaurant had also been affected by months of protests and unrest in the city-state.
The restaurant, Rech, at Hong Kong's InterContinental hotel has cut its losses and shuttered its doors with the loss of about 20 jobs.
The restaurant which 2017 in the Tsim Sha Tsui area replaced another Ducasse restaurant, Spoon and was famed for its imported French seafood and desserts.
Rech had held a Michelin star for its three years of operation and had one of the best views of Hong Kong’s skyline, however, it was not enough to prevent the closure of the restaurant.
It is thought that the effects of government protests, which kept domestic custom away as well as the coronavirus outbreak which kept Chinese tourists away combined to put the restaurant in a position of making losses from which it could not recover.
Rech certainly won’t be the first Hong Kong restaurant to close its doors. As the coronavirus outbreak spreads globally, this is surely the first in a long list of high-profile closures we are likely to see.
