After a period of lockdown around the world, the Michelin Guide returned to rating restaurants with its first ever stars for Slovenia.
The small European nation was the focus of the first Michelin Guide to be published after the coronavirus lockdown, and of course the big winner on the day was the country’s best-known chef Ana Roš of Hiša Franko.
Slovenia, bordered by Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia, has vast tracts of Alpine forest and unspoiled wilderness, in which chefs can forage for wild ingredients and where pristine glacial water flows. In recent years the country has made great strides in sustainability and in promoting its gastronomy, and now it boasts a total of five restaurants with one Michelin star, and one restaurant with two stars.
While the Michelin Guide for Slovenia has been in the works for some time, it was the first country to announce that it was free of the coronavirus, meaning the ceremony could go ahead without face masks or social distancing restrictions. The ceremony, live streamed on Facebook, looked almost pre-pandemic, albeit the presence of Michelin Guide international director Gwendal Poullennec was via a video stream from Paris.
