AM par Alexandre Mazzia is 50 Best's One to Watch 2022

AM par Alexandre Mazzia restaurant in Marseille has been announced as the winner of the American Express One to Watch Award ahead of The World's 50 Best Restaurants 2022 awards ceremony, sponsored by S.Pellegrino and Acqua Panna.

French chef-owner Alexandre Mazzia opened his 22-cover restaurant in France's multicultural southern city in 2014, achieving three Michelin stars within just six years. While well known in France, this is the first time the 46-year-old former basketball player has been highlighted on the global 50 Best platform.

Born and raised in the Democratic Republic of Congo, having moved to France in his early teens, Mazzia draws inspiration from a combination of international influences and counts Pierre Hermé, Michel Bras and the late Santi Santamaria among his past chef mentors.

Mazzia's menu, which is presented as a boarding pass, focuses on fish and vegetables, and aspires to take guests on an 'emotional journey'. Diners are able to choose between a short, medium or long meal with dishes created using unusual ingredient and flavour combinations, like smoked eel with chocolate and crystallised seaweed with bottarga.

He will receive the award at The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2022 ceremony to be held at Old Billingsgate market in the City of London on Monday 18 July.
