What are almonds and their characteristics?
Almonds are what are known as drupes, the fruit of the almond tree consisting of an outer hull and a hard shell with the seed. They are not, strictly speaking, nuts. Almond trees are native to Iran and the Levant, but flourish in a mild Mediterranean climate and are cultivated all over the world — California produces more than half the planet’s supply. Almonds are predominantly sweet, but some trees produce seeds that are more bitter. Almonds are a good source of protein and contain a number of vitamins and minerals.
