The Maido restaurant in Lima, Peru, run by the charismatic chef Mitsuharu Tsumura, has been announced as the best restaurant in Latin America at the Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants awards held in Bogotá, Colombia.
Speaking to a packed house, Tsumura said: “I want to thank all the team at Maido – I know they’re watching – I thank everyone because without them it wouldn't be possible. I have list of friends here in the crowd. Thanks to everyone who has supported us and been with us all these years.” He also used the opportunity to pay homage to chef Carlos Garcîa in Venezuela as the crowd erupted in applause for support of a chef who has been through social, cultural and political turmoil as of late.
