The Brazilian chef Alex Atala has been chosen as the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement award ahead of the announcement of Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants List in Lima, Peru.
Atala receives the award for his work at the D.O.M. restaurant in São Paulo, an platform from which he has pushed the boundaries of Brazilian cuisine both in his home country and around the world.
Speaking about the achievement, Atala said: “I feel very happy and extremely honoured to receive the Diners Club® Lifetime Achievement Award. I hope that with this recognition, Latin America's gastronomy gains a louder voice and that its strength is shown. I also hope that with this award, people see the power of ingredients to drive social change and, especially, that by structuring the food chain, it’s possible to place greater value on our culture and environment.”
Atala opened D.O.M. back in 1999 with an aim of presenting local ingredients in a way that no one had ever done before. His modern interpretation of indigenous ingredients has become the foundation of his work, using the medium of cooking to connect diners with his land and introducing the producers who care for local ingredients into the daily work of Brazilian chefs.
Atala will receive the award during the announcement of Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants List on September 3rd in Lima.
