The Michelin Guide Rio de Janeiro and São Paolo 2020 has been released with news of each Brazilian city now boasting a new two-Michelin-star restaurant.
In Rio de Janeiro, chef Alberto Landgraf at Oteque restaurant earns a second Michelin star, as does Ryo chef Edson Yamashita's Ryo Gastronomia in São Paulo. They join existing two-star restaurants D.O.M., by Alex Atala and Giovane Carneiro, and Oro, by Felipe Bronze.
At Oteque restaurant, chef Alberto Landgraf serves up fish and seafood from the region, with dishes like baroa potato, Brazil nut milk, mushroom vinaigrette and white truffles, and grilled snapper with coconut, pupunha palm and coconut milk featuring on the menu.
At Ryo Gastronomia, Edson Yamashita showcases his Japanese cuisine in dishes like Toro sashimi, vacuum grilled charcoal octopus with pea cream and pepper oil, and honey ice cream from Jataí for dessert.
Both cities have yet to make a three-star listing, despite the guide being introduced six years ago.
There is now a total of four two-Michelin-star restaurants in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, and ten one-Michelin-star restaurants;
Michelin's more informal dining category has also experienced healthy growth, with ten new restaurants being listed in the Bib Gourmand category, taking the total up to 39 restaurants. There are also now 115 Michelin Plate restaurants, of which 13 are new.
Speaking about this new edition, Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the Michelin Guides explained: "Each time they explore the streets of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, our inspectors discover new creative plates, made with diverse and quality local products and with rich influences from around the world.”
