Michelin has announced its 2020 guide to Thailand and there are two brand new two-star restaurants.
Like the previous two years, no Thai restaurant picked up Michelin’s highest honour of three stars in the Michelin Guide 2020 Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Phang-nga, however, this is the first time native Thai restaurants serving Thai cuisine have been awarded two stars.
The new two-star additions are celebrity chef Chumpol Jangprai’s R.Haarn, an elegant Thai restaurant that champions ‘royal court-style’ cuisine, as well as Sorn, a fine dining trailblazer that serves southern Thai cuisine. Three restaurants retained their two-star status - the French restaurants Le Normandie and Mezzaluna, as well as Suhring, a restaurant owned by German twin brothers, bring the total to five.
In all 29 restaurants in Thailand received stars. Although this is the first year the guide ventured to Chang Mai, the capital of northern Thailand, no restaurants there received stars.
Two big names were missing from the guide; Gaggan, which closed under controversial circumstances in August and L'Atelier de Jöel Robuchon which shuttered in May.
New one-star restaurants included progressive Thai restaurant 80/20 led by chef Napol Jantraget and Saki Hoshino, Le Bua's fine-dining restaurant Chef's Table, Chef Andy Yang's modern street food place Table 38, and renowned Thai eatery Khao by chef Vichit Mukura.
At a gala event at Bangkok Marriott Hotel – The Surawongse the stars were announced along with Thailand’s first Bib Gourmand listing.
