The Michelin Guide will announce its 2020 edition for New York on 21 October and Dan Barber’s Blue Hill at Stone Barns could, at last, be recognised with one or even two stars.
The Michelin Guide began allocating its coveted stars in America in 2006 and since the beginning, the New York Guide has confined its search to the five boroughs; Manhattan, The Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island. Other Michelin Guides in the US, however, include surrounding areas like San Francisco's Wine Country and the Washington D.C. guide which takes in The Inn At Little Washington in rural Virginia.
This year will be different and Michelin has announced that they will be moving out of the city and have been scouting in Westchester County, which includes Blue Hill at Stone Barns.
“Inspectors were particularly impressed by the technique and highest quality of ingredients that they discovered during multiple visits to the area. Our move into Westchester County is a natural progression from restaurants in the city to those a short drive away,” says the guide’s international director Gwendal Poullennec.
Eight restaurants from the area have been granted Bib Gourmands status for New York in advance of the Michelin Star announcement next week and many are speculating that the Blue Hill at Stone Barns - that has been a leader in the farm to fork movement and a beacon for responsible gastronomy - is set for a two-star debut in the guide. It is unlikely that any restaurant could storm the guide with three at its first attempt.
