The third edition of the 50 Top Pizza awards was revealed in the home of pizza last night, at Mercadante in Naples.
Franco Pepe, patron of the pizzeria Pepe in Grani restaurant in Caiazzo, Italy (former winner of the first two editions) and Francesco Martucci, patron of the pizzeria I Masanielli in Caserta were crowned joint winners for Italy. Ciro Salvo took third position on the medal podium, with his 50 Kalò pizzeria.
The night held a double win for Franco Pepe who, in addition to first position, also won the S.Pellegrino Award for the best pizzeria in Asia with Kytaly, the Italian restaurant project born in Geneva in the Bortesi family that debuted in Hong Kong last year.
A fun and exciting evening was had, full of important guests and smiles, confirming that the interest in the world of pizza is ever stronger and multifaceted. The "passport of Italian cuisine", as Oscar Farinetti defined it speaking on stage,"leave our country to become the spokesperson for Italian excellence wherever there is an oven and a great desire to create."
From Asia to Africa, from Oceania to South America, from Brazil to Japan, where pizza speaks the language of the country in which it lands with elegance but without ever forgetting its profound Italian matrix.
Other big international wins on the night included Razza Pizza Artigianale in New Jersey in the US, crowned best pizzeria in North America and 50 Kalo in London, named the best Napolitan style pizza in the world outside of Italy.
The success of 50 Top Pizza increasingly highlights - as Franco Pepe always says - pizza is a "disk of pasta" that allows territories and their specific identities to "rise", emphasizing the people who work with their heads down to make Italy's food production great.
The 50 best pizzerias in Italy is a collaboration with Luciano Pignataro, Albart Sapere and Barbara Guerra (LSDM) and includes S.Pellegrino and Acqua Panna among its sponsors.
