Peppe Pizzeria in Paris has been named the best pizzeria in Europe in the annual ranking of the best pizza spots in Europe (excluding Italy), compiled by 50 Top Pizza and sponsored by Acqua Panna and S.Pellegrino.
Rising an incredible 30 places from last year, Peppe Pizzeria, owned and operated by the master pizza chef Peppe Cutraro, took this year's top spot as well as receiving the Performance of the Year 2021 – Prosecco DOC Award. The Parisian pizzeria's Paris/Naples calzone, filled with Truffle du Molise, guanciale, burrata from Puglia and mushrooms from Paris, was described as 'a delight'.
In second position is Francesco Calò’s pizzeria, Via Toledo Enopizzeria in Vienna, also named as the best pizzeria in Austria for 2021. In third place is Madrid's Fratelli Figurato, also the number one pizzeria in Spain, managed by Riccardo and Vittorio Figurato.
Fourth in Europe is this year’s best pizzeria in England and last year's winner, 50 Kalò di Ciro Salvo Pizzeria London. Christian Puglisi's Bæst, in Copenhagen, follows in fifth place, also making it the top pizzeria in Denmark.
Twenty-eight European countries are represented in the ranking this year. At the top of the list are France and Spain with 5 establishments each; Germany and England have 4 each, then 3 for both Denmark and Russia, and two for Belgium, Finland and Switzerland. They are followed by the remaining nations with one pizzeria each.
New for this 2021 edition is the 'Green Oven' recognition which takes into account the environmental sustainability of a pizzeria. The three inaugural winners this year are Bæst in Copenhagen, Sartoria Panatieri in Barcelona and Lilla Napoli in Falkenberg.
Special Awards
A number of special awards were also given in recognition of specific talent and unique qualities of the pizzerias, including this year's winner of the prestigious 'Pizza Maker of the Year 2021 – S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna Award', which went to Filomena Tursi from 450°C pizzeria in Turku, Finland, which comes in at 36th in the general ranking.
