Influential restaurant guide Le Fooding has awarded the title of best village bistro in France to a small cafe run by a British chef.
L’Eicerie de Dienne, a cafe-cum-shop in a remote village in central France is run by Manchester-born chef Chris Wright and has been open since June. Wright previously cooked for over a decade at “nano-bistro” Le Timbre, in Paris.
The cafe, in the Volcans d’Auvergne national park, was praised by Le Fooding for its “Outstanding homemade terrine with cornichons ... an insanely good cheese platter; and a divine tarte tatin with cream.” Lunch costs €18 with a €2 Euro cheese supplement.
Wright told The Guardian that his intention was to open a restaurant in the region to get away from it all, but he has since had to hire staff to cope with demand once word got around. “I was hoping to wind down with a quiet little place where you could get a nice slice of ham and cheese. I failed there,” he laughed. A B&B is rumoured for 2017.
