A street food noodle hotspot in Thailand has been awarded a Michelin star in the first ever Michelin guide for Bangkok, Thailand.
Raan Jay Fai is a fast, spicy and delicious street food style spot that’s famous for fiery noodles, a deep crab curry and a delicious crab omelette. It’s also famous for its 70-year-old owner, Jay Fai. She still mans the huge woks at her restaurant and can be seen donning her trademark goggles that protect her eyes from the huge flames as she fires up dishes.
Raan Jay Fai was the only street food spot in to get a star in the 2018 Michelin guide for Bangkok. Though this is not the first time Michelin has awarded a Michelin star to a relatively cheap street food style restaurant. Back in 2016 the guide included the Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice and Noodle hawker stall in Singapore within their one-star category.
Though Raan Jay Fai is an interesting entry for Michelin, it’s worth noting that it is known as Bangkok’s most expensive street food spot, where dishes can clock in at $20 - high for the local average but cheap for the chance to try some Michelin starred grub.
