An ex-Noma chef will launch a pop up restaurant at Everest base camp in December, as part of a plan to open 20 pop up restaurants in 20 countries, in 20 months.
James Sharman, who has also previously worked under Tom Aikens, and his group of travelling gastronomes One Star House Party are now taking reservations for a 14-day trip that will start in Kathmandu on 10 December. The party, which includes food and drink professionals from the likes of The Ledbury and Soho House, will then embark on a hike to base camp to construct the pop-up, before returning to Kathmandu on 23 December.
The trip costs $1050 (not including flights to Nepal), but hurry as there are only 15 places available (deadline is 29 November). Find more information and book here.
We’re not sure what’s on the menu yet, but each pop-up will be inspired by local cuisine and the team want to use their "carpentry skills to carve a restaurant out of the materials they find in each city" – they originally started as an Airbnb pop up. So far, the team has popped up in Beijing and Ho Chi Min City, and they can currently be found doing their thing in Bangkok – see the video below.
This isn’t the first time the culinary world has pitched up in the vicinty of the world’s highest peak: in 2015 Michelin starred chef Sat Bains had to pull out of an attempt to hold the world’s highest dinner party at 7100m after falling ill with a pulmonary edema.
