Astrid Y Gaston - the famed restaurant started by chef Gaston Acurio back in 1994 - has been voted the best restaurant in Latin America's on the first ever Latin America's 50 Best Restaurants List which was announced this morning at a packed reception in Lima, Peru.

It was the charismatic chef Alex Atala who picked up second place on the list with his D.O.M restaurant in Sao Paulo Brazil also picked as the S.Pellegrino Best Restaurant in Brazil. An award not just for the restaurant's creative plates but also the part Atala and his team are playing in rediscovering and emphasizing traditional Brazilian ingredients and dishes.

Heading to Mexico it was Enrique Olvera at the Pujol restaurant that took third place on the list. The venue was also awarded the S.Pellegrino Best Restaurant in Mexico award and was picked as the Chefs' Choice.
Young chef Virgilio Martinez came in high at 4 for his unique variety of Peruvian and international fusion served up at his Central restaurant in Lima and female chef Roberta Sudbrack made the top tier at number 10 on the list.
As well as sitting top of the list, Gaston Acurio was also chosen as the much deserved winner of The Lifetime Achievement Award and chef Helena Rizzo - with her Mani restaurant in Brazil taking 5th place - was also picked as The Best Female Chef in Latin America.
