When you’ve perfected the art of making your own pizza dough, there really is no better way to cook your pizza than in your own wood-fired pizza oven. Here’s how to make one in your own garden using just bricks.
There are plenty of ways to cook a pizza – in a cast-iron skillet, using a pizza stone in your kitchen oven, or with specially designed mini pizza ovens. However, the wood-fired pizza oven is the best way because it consistently gives the best results. Not everyone can splash out on a huge pizza oven for their home, so here is how to make your own, in your garden, using materials that anyone can source and afford – bricks.
Using just 47 small red bricks and two larger concrete building bricks, Grant Chilly from ChefSteps shows the technique to building a pizza oven with bricks. The bottom chamber houses the wood fire and the top chamber acts as the oven,
The important thing is that there is a vent at the back that will draw the heat from the bottom chamber and move it over on top of the pizza to ensure even cooking on top and bottom. The large stone tile bricks conduct the heat, both in the oven to cook the pizza, and on top to act as a burner.
While not the most efficient way to cook pizza (the electric pizza ovens are probably the best), it is definitely the most fun and by far the most satisfying way to cook pizza at home. Check out the second video in the series to see how to regulate the heat, and to use the top brick to cook a lot of things that aren’t pizza, including a tomahawk steak, focaccias and more.
