Alchemist is OAD's Best Restaurant in Europe 2021

The Opinionated About Dining blog has released its annual list of the Top 100+ Restaurants in Europe, and it's Rasmus Munk's Alchemist in Denmark that takes top spot, just two years after opening.

Thirty-year-old Munk has achieved incredible recognition for his new experimental restaurant, in spite of eight months of lockdown during the pandemic. In 2020, the restaurant was awarded two Michelin stars, as well as being named the best restaurant in The White Guide in 2020 and 2021.

A unique evening at the Copenhagen restaurant transports diners into the Alchemist universe of gastronomy art, drama, music, sensory stimulation and visual technology, with several dishes carrying strong political and environmental messages.

A 'blown away' Munk said: “We are still only starting to discover the potential of holistic cuisine, and I hope that this acknowledgement will contribute to creating an even larger platform for us to raise awareness about
social issues, sustainability and animal welfare. It also reinforces my belief that it is possible to operate outside of the given boundaries and definitions of what a restaurant is, and that it is doable to merge the worlds of gastronomy and art.”

Alchemist Reloaded: Copenhagen's Most Creative Restaurant Returns

Alchemist Reloaded, Copenhagen's most creative restaurant, by chef Rasmus Munk opens its doors today with a new menu and new art installations.

Three-Michelin-star Restaurant Frantzén in Stockholm, owned by chef Björn Frantzén, falls into second spot after two consecutive years at number one while Spain's Etxebarri moves up into third place.

Andreas Caminada's Schloss Schauenstein in Switzerland moves into fourth position, having held third place for a couple of years.

The 2021 lists for Europe Classical, Europe Gourmet Casual and Europe Cheap Eats have also been released (see below).

The blog, which was started in 2004 by former music industry executive Steve Plotnicki, has published the Top 100+ lists since 2012. The results are based on the opinions of 6,000 differently weighted voters.
