The 2012 edition of the Michelin Main Cities of Europe Guide has been announced. Including 44 cities in over 20 countries the guide is intended to offer advice on some of the best restaurants in the world. This year's guide features a selection of 2,100 restaurants and 1,500 hotels.
Two new restaurants will debut on the list and go straight in at a two star level, The Gourmet Restaurant by Silvio Nickol in Vienna and Maaemo by Esben Holmboe Bang in Oslo, a very rare occasion as restaurants usually work through the star rating, debuting at one and only then working to gain their second.
Rene Redzepi's Noma, who many believed would pick up its third star, will infact retain a two star rating - something many people online are shocked about. The Danish chef, famous for foraging and discovering new Nordic ingredients, has been voted number 1 on The S.Pellegrino 50 Best Restaurants List two years consecutively and finds out on the 30th April if he will retain the title. Many believed he would land his third star in the Michelin 2012 Guide with people on Twitter voicing dismay.
Three stars mean exceptional cuisine that's worth a special journey, two stars excellent cooking that's worth a detour, one star suggests a very good restaurant in its category. The new guide includes 287 restaurants with one star (44 new entries), 74 restaurants with two stars (18 new) and 15 places with three stars (no new entries). The guide launched in 1990 and was intended as a resource for chauffeurs to recommend hotels and restaurants to their clients.
The Michelin 2012 Main Cities Guide is released on the 15th March and features the Nordic region, Austria, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Poland and Paris but France, Italy, Spain & Portugal plus other countries also have their own country based guides.
