Central restaurant in Peru, has been crowned at the top of Latin America 50 Best Restaurants at a star studded ceremony in Lima. The crowd erupted with applause as Virgilio Martinez, his wife and fellow chef Pia Leon, sister Malena and sommelier Greg took to the stage to accept the award.
Martinez said: “It was not on the agenda to win, it’s been a lot of sacrifice and thanks to a great team - all my team is going to be crazy at my place. I want to be clear about something, this really for us is incredible - I have no words but thanks to all of you.”
Last year’s winner Astrid Y Gaston slipped to second position on the list while Alex Atala and his D.O.M restaurant in Brazil took third and the title of Best Restaurant in Brazil.
Central was 4th on the list in 2013. Their altitude themed menu takes a trip across Peru presenting dishes from a number of different nights across the country. You can read more about it here.
