After years of temporary pop-up installations at Milan Design Week, the British industrial designer, Tom Dixon has decided to create a permanent presence in the city with The Manzoni restaurant.
The Manzoni was opened to coincide with Milan Design Week and the restaurant will open in May as a permanent restaurant and showroom in the city.
Named after the street where it is located, 5 Via Manzoni, close to Milan's La Scala opera house, The Manzoni is kitted out with furniture and fittings from Tom Dixon ranges.
"With the city being so active and engaging right now, it is the right time to forget being temporary and build something permanent," - Tom Dixon.
“The Manzoni is more than a restaurant,” said a press release to announce the opening. “It is also an experimental space, a theatrical backdrop for the best of Italian food and an international stage to present our latest innovations, and our best sellers. Design Research Studio collaborated with JLK Design Studio to build a space that allows visitors to experience multiple atmospheres, with each room exploring its own narrative.”
Texture and sombre, monastic features, contrasted with ephemeral lighting components create different spaces allowing for very different experiences.
During Design Week the food offering was created by Modena chef Marta Pulini and executive chef Roy Smith Paredes Ynfantes. The menu was based on locally sourced ingredients around a theme of monochrome. Details of the permanent menu are not yet available.
