Fashion designer Phillip Lim has released a cookbook in collaboration with artist and photographer pal Viviane Sassen. In this limited edition book, the creative director of the namesake label 3.1 Phillip Lim, shares 12 recipes, each that carry a special personal meaning to the designer, presented alongside the striking art photography by Sassen.
More Than Our Bellies is not your usual cookbook. This art-meets-fashion-meets-food book has been described as an 'expression of love' by the designer, who said "Food is like love to me: the love we dream about, the love we give and the love we receive. Love memories that sustain and nourish more than our bellies.”
Each recipe is introduced and narrated by Lim, and feel like personal revelations that are only rendered more powerful thanks to Sassen’s strikingly colourful images of food. The images, from Sassen’s travels through Asia and Africa, add a sense of profound meaning to ordinary moments, and together with Lim’s narratives they help carry the idea of food as a mechanism that we use to connect to our past, and build bridges between people.
“Cooking began as a way to bring me closer to home and closer to memories of my mother, because feeding her family was the way she spoke her love. The scent of certain foods I knew as a boy are olfactory recollections that fondly transport me back to her kitchen where I would linger in anticipation and excitement.”
More Than Our Bellies is available online at www.31philliplim.com as well as in 3.1 Phillip Lim boutiques worldwide.
