Garima Arora, executive chef and founder of Gaa in Bangkok, has been named elit Vodka Asia’s Best Female Chef 2019 ahead of Asia's 50 Best Restaurants announcement sponsored by S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna.
Meet chef Arora in our interview
Arora started out as a journalist before discovering her love of the culinary arts, training at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and graduating in 2010 before spending her formative years at Noma in Copenhagen and honing her skills under under chef René Redzepi.
In 2016 Arora moved to Asia taking up the position of sous chef at Gaggan's eponymous restaurant in Bangkok, before taking the leap to open her own place, Gaa just a year later. The three storey restaurant, located in the same street, in which she has forged her own culinary identity showcasing original dishes using traditional Indian techniques and local produce to critical acclaim.
Accepting the prestigious Best Female Chef title, Arora said: “This award is a validation of our team’s hard work and commitment to excellence. I am honoured that chefs and respected industry peers voting on this award recognise and appreciate our efforts.”
Speaking of the win William Drew, Group Editor of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants, commented: “ Garima Arora has had a huge impact on the dining scene in Asia in a short period with her brilliant blend of Indian traditions and Thai ingredients.”
Arora also famously became the first Indian female chef to win a Michelin star, at just 32 years old back in November 2018.
The chef will collect the accolade during the Asia's 50 Best Restaurants award ceremony on 26 March 2019 in Macao.
Last year's Asia's Best Female Chef also hailed from Bangkok, Bee Santongun from Paste.
