The World Restaurant Awards, created by IMG in partnership with Joe Warwick and Andrea Petrini, have been announced in Paris with a host of restaurants around the world celebrated across a diverse mix of categories.
The Restaurant of The Year award went to the coastal restaurant, Wolfgat in South Africa which was also awarded in the Off-Map category for those restaurants where the journey to get there is part of the story.
Speaking just after receiving the award, chef Kobus van der Merwe was elated at what the announcement meant for his restaurant and South African cuisine.
The Tattoo-free chef Award went to Alain Ducasse. Watch the video here below to find out why.
The Arrival of The Year was chef Thomas Frebel for his Inua restaurant in Tokyo.
The Ethical Thinking award went to Refettorio (Food for Soul) - the project of Massimo Bottura and Lara Gilmore that's fed thousands of needy people with food that would otherwise go to waste.
The Enduring Classic award went to the La Mère Brazier restaurant in Lyon, a place that was originally established in 1921.
Wolfgat restaurant in South Africa, the Restaurant of the Year, was also crowned as the best Off-Map Destination.
The No-Reservations Required category, for those restaurants that don't take reservations, was awarded to the Mocotó restaurant in Brazil. Chef Rodrigo Oliveira was very happy after the announcement.
The Original Thinking restaurant was Le Clarence in Paris where chef Christophe Pelé was highland for his fun-dining, fine dining.
The House Special went to the Lido84 restaurant in Italy for chef Riccardo Camanini’s Cacio e Pepe cooked inside a pig's bladder.
Forward Drinking award went to Andoni Luis Aduriz at the Mugaritz restaurant for his "ideas in liquid refreshment". An award the chef seemed happy to receive.
Event of The Year was the eye-opening and thought-provoking Refugee Food Festival in Paris.
Atmosphere of The Year went to chef Jordan Kahn at Vespertine in Los Angeles for his wonderful collaboration with artists, musicians, designers and all manner of craftsmen to create a restaurant experience like no other.
Many categories at the World Restaurant Awards were created to signify diversity in the industry, to focus on smaller places alongside established classics and to create a different kind of selection to the usual food ceremonies.
Trolley of The Year went to Ballymaloe House in Ireland for their wonderful, sweet and often seasonal dessert trolley.
Red-Wine Serving Restaurant went to the Noble Rot crew from London for the dedicated approach to sourcing and explaining wonderful wine. The team were very happy to share the stage with the VIP lineup.
Instagram Account of The Year went to another legendary French chef, Alain Passard for his colorful and creative social account.
Tweezer-Free Kitchen, for those restaurants with a more hands-on approach, went to the Bo.Lan restaurant in Bangkok, Thailand.
The Long-Form Journalism award went to Lisa Abend for her piece, The Food Circus, which was published in Fool Magazine.
The Collaboration of The Year, designed to award restaurants for their partnership with suppliers, went to the vegetarian restaurant Cafe Paradiso and their close collaboration with Gort Na Nairn Farm - both in Ireland.
The Tattoo-Free Chef of the year, aimed at a chef who is not swayed by trends rather than a chef with no body art, went to the legendary Alain Ducasse.
