Netflix has announced that the new season of Chef’s Table will be available on February 22 on its streaming service.
Season 6 of the series focuses on “the journey home” and features chefs Mashama Bailey of The Grey in Savannah, Georgia; Sean Brock, formerly of Husk and McCrady’s in Charleston, South Carolina; Asma Khan of London’s Darjeeling Express; and Italian celebrity butcher Dario Cecchini.
The line-up comes with a couple of ‘firsts’, one being that it features one of the first black, female finalists at the James Beard Awards, Mashama Bailey. Chef Bailey was one of the two finalists for Top Chef at the latest edition in 2018, reported by The New Yorker as being the first time ever in the history of the prestigious ceremony to have African American female chef finalists. Bailey was born in New York, and grew up in Harlem, but her food at the award-winning restaurant The Grey has been credited for creating a unique blend of New American, African, Southern cuisines.
This season also features the first British chef, Asma Khan (the show has so far featured seven US chefs, two from Italy, two from Spain, in a total of 26 chefs featured so far). Khan's restaurant Darjeeling Express in London’s Soho district is a homage to the dishes of her childhood in Calcutta, and serves Indian food from recipes handed down by her family in an all-female cast kitchen.
Up next on "the journey home" is Sean Brock in Appalachian US, followed by a trip to the medieval Tuscan city of Panzano with Dario Cecchini.
Brock, the creator of the Husk restaurants, has been considered for years as the major voice in the Southern cuisine. His Husk empire consists of four restaurants in Charleston, Nashville, Greenville and Savannah, and use only ingredients that are entirely from the south, many of which are indigenous to the region.
Cecchini on the other hand, is a larger than life chef from Tuscany who hails from a long lineage of butchers in the family. "The most famous butcher in the world" according to The New York Times, Cecchini operates a meat shop and a string of restaurants in the area and has become known for his nose-to-tail style of cooking and creative, masterful ways with meat. We visited Cecchini a few years back in his home town, where we got talking about his passion for high-quality fast food and his philosophy in killing animals for food.

Chef's Table is not the only food-themed show to be released in February on the streaming service. Netflix has also announced the release of the new series of The Big Family Cooking Showdown: Season 2, also on February 22, and the hilarious baking-fails show Nailed It! will launch its Mexico edition, out February 8.
