New Orleans is synonymous with Mardi Gras, po boy sandwiches, beignets and king cake. These are just some of the culinary jewels you'll stumble across on a visit to the Big Easy.
This Louisiana hot spot will host the upcoming King Cake Festival ahead of Mardi Gras. The event will take place January 27, 2019 and will honor New Orleans' beloved king cake, a colorful cake steeped in history.
With that in mind, we'd like to share a wonderful recipe for recreating this decadent cake at home.
What Is King Cake?

King cakes are made of sweet brioche dough and filled with a delectable mixture of butter, brown sugar, raisins and pecans. The dough is then shaped into a ring and topped with icing and green, gold and purple sprinkles.
One unique aspect of the king cake is that a small plastic baby or trinket is hidden inside (safely done so after baking). The person who finds the good luck charm gets the honor of hosting the next party.
King Cake Recipe
This recipe from Allrecipes yields two beautiful king cakes. You'll need a small saucepan for heating up milk, a stand mixer and plenty of time to allow the dough to rest and rise before baking. This is a great cake recipe to make on a weekend when you have more time on your hands.
