Restaurant Magazine has revealed the 100 best restaurants in the UK at this year's Estrella Damm National Restaurant Awards in London, with Kent seaside pub The Sportsman taking the top spot for a second consecutive year.
In at number two and climbing one place from last year is Brett Graham's two-Michelin-star Ledbury in London while Andrew Wong's progressive Chinese restaurant A Wong, also in the capital, jumped 13 places to number three.
Chef proprieter Stephen Harris of The Sportsman, who once famously referred to his establishment in Seasalter as a "grotty seaside pub", also went on to scoop the best gastropub award. Chef Jason Atherton was named best restaurateur, while inimitable Frenchman Claude Bosi took the chef’s chef award as well 23rd place with the recently re-opened Bibendum in Chelsea, London. Elizabeth Haig of Kaizen House was named the chef to watch, and all eyes will be on her with the Shibui opening in the pipeline.
The annual restaurant awards are designed to represent the best of British dining and range from casual bistros to Michelin starred restaurants. The rankings are based on seven votes each from 180 chefs, restaurateurs and food writers over a 12 month period.
