Oh avocado how do I love thee, let me count the ways…
“America is in love with avocados” The Washington Post reported back in January where it was billed as America’s favourite fruit with the highest consumption coming from the Californians in LA.
And the USA is not alone, with good reason. The word of the delicious green, creamy fruit seems to have spread thoughout the world: you’ll find it in spread on toast pretty much on Antipodean-style brunch menu, in vegan desserts, smoothies, smoothie bowls, salads and just about anywhere it can squeeze itself into a 'healthy' menu. It also rose to fame as one of the most Instagrammed foods of all time. Blogger and fashion pundit, Leandra Medine, aka the Man Repeller, accurately sized up avocado's status: ‘Avocados are the Oprah of Instagram’, she ruled in a post.
And as avocado lovers will agree, there’s something about avocados that gives them an elevated status. Whether it’s because they’re more expensive than your average fruit, their temperamental nature, the uncertainty over ripeness or quality or just the sheer excitement following the tentative wait to find out you picked a good'un.
Whilst avocado's fame and versatility goes before them we get back to basics re-capping on some top tips to assessing ripeness, how to tackle opening and slicing, and 8 different ways to make the most of your avocado, including avocado fries!
Enjoy!
How to tell if an Avocado is Ripe
Interestingly, avocados don't ripen on the tree, they only start to soften once harvested. This leaves accurately assessing how long it will be before you can enjoy your green friend to a bit of a guessing game. And in this case it's a question of practice makes perfect. Unripe, firm or green fruit can take four to five days to ripen at room temperature, so if you're preparing for an event always try to think ahead. A ripe avocado should yield to gentle but firm pressure.
