If you are craving some outstanding gelato you’ll have to plan a trip Down Under. That’s because the Cow and the Moon gelato shop in Sydney has taken the title of the World’s Best Gelato Maker.
The family-owned gelato and coffee bar beat out 23 other finalist to take first place in the Gelato World Tour competition held in Rimini, Italy. Their winning flavor created by owner John Crowl was Mandorla Affogato, a gelato featuring caramelized almonds from Italy, Kenyan coffee and Madagascar vanilla.
“It's about trying to understand the flavour, working on the salt, sweet and sour. You have to marry the flavours so that they blend well together,” Crowl told the press about his winning combination.
Italy, the motherland of gelato, came in not far behind. Second place went to Francesco Mastroianni of Il Cantagalli while the third spot when to Alessandro Lancierini of Gelateria Fiore.
