A recent financial report by Swiss chocolatiers Lindt & Sprüngli has found that Europe has too much chocolate and is “saturated” with the sweet stuff currently. Additionally, the report found that Swiss consumers are purchasing their chocolate elsewhere in Europe due to heavy discounting.
The news comes, Munchies reports, at a time when cocoa prices are soaring, partly due to harsh weather conditions in West Africa, and while the US is the biggest consumer of chocolate – approximately 18% of global chocolate confectionary by value in 2015 – it’s the Swiss who consume the most per capita: an estimated 9.1kg in 2015.
