San Sebastián in Spain has topped a new list of the world’s best food destinations 2017, beating the likes of London, New York, Paris and Tokyo to the title of best global food destination.
The Basque city has long been revered for its food culture – both its Michelin-Starred restaurants (including three, three-stars in and around the city) and most famously, its pinxtos.
The 100-strong index of the best food destinations 2017 was compiled by British catering firm Caterwings. They looked at multiple criteria, including number of restaurants, affordability, proliferation of fast food, and vegan and vegetarian options. They also took ratings from over 20,000 journalists and critics into account.
San Sebastián scored highly on quality and critics choice, and was also in the top third for affordability.
Tokyo, which has the most Michelin-stars of any city on earth came second on the list, while New York came third. Barcelona and Madrid also made the top 10, showing why Spain is one of the world's top food tourism destinations. Lima, Peru, home to Maido, Latin America's Best Restaurant, is number eight.
