Umberto Bombana, the Italian chef behind the highly acclaimed 8½ Otto e Mezzo Bombana restaurant in Hong Kong is the winner of the 2017 Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants The Diners Club® Lifetime Achievement Award, it has been announced.
The chef will receive the award at the ceremony in Bangkok on 21 February, sponsored by S.Pellegrino and Acqua Panna, and live-streamed on Fine Dining Lovers.
Bombana, originally from Bergamo in Northern Italy, spent nearly a decade cooking in Los Angeles before making the move to Hong Kong in 1993. 8½ Otto e Mezzo Bombana was the first Italian restaurant outside of Italy to gain three Michelin stars. Two other awards have already been announced: May Chow has been named as Asia’s Best Female Chef 2017, while the Toc Toc restaurant in Seoul, headed by chef Kim Dae-Chun, is Asia’s One to Watch.
