Some believe the best way to cook a steak is to sous vide first and then finish in a pan, to get that delicious medium rare and a nice char on the outside. Others say no way: seal in the pan and then into the oven; or try the reverse sear.
There’s clearly no general consensus on how to cook a steak (that’s the beauty of it too), but if you do want to try the sous vide method, but don’t have the equipment, then the video below from Cook with Me.at shows you how to improvise using a dishwasher.
The video suggests setting the temperature to 50°C/122°F and cooking the vacuum-packed steak 90 minutes, then finishing in a hot pan with olive oil and butter, and whatever else you choose to add. Also, seasoning the meat after it’s rested.
It may sound like a crazy idea, but actually if you want to slow cook steak at a low temperature, this kind of makes sense. Why don’t you try it at home and let us know how it turns out over on our Facebook page?
Further down, you’ll also see a video showing you how to sous vide bacon – a step too far?
