As we recently reported, #foodporn is not a new phenomenon at all, and examples can be found in Western art stretching back 500 years, according to recent research. This funny new Ikea commercial plays on our obsession with phorographing our food, imagining what it would’ve been like in the 18th century had diners wished to immortalise their meals in paint before sharing the results.
Let's Relax
In the minute and a half long Ikea commercial, entitled Let's Relax, we see a well–heeled 18th century family sitting down to eat. However the father wants the meal to be captured for posterity before they start. He summons an artist and after the scene has been painted in oils, the artwork is taken on something of a tour of grand ballrooms and market squares, as public opinion is sought. The father, waiting nervously for the painting to return, is relieved to receive a thumbs–up (a cheeky little Facebook reference there); and so, the meal can begin. Then we switch to the modern day and the same father is holding up the family meal to take a photograph of the food with his phone.
Satire
This is not the first time Ikea advertising has lampooned the absurdities of pop culture of course – you may remember their hilarious Apple parody, or there's the news that they've recently started trolling Kanye West on social media.
