The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2017 will be held on 5 April in Melbourne, Australia it has been announced.
The event will be live streamed here, on Fine Dining Lovers at 8pm (AEST) Melbourne time and 10 AM GMT.
Celebrating its 15th anniversary, the event will be staged at the city's Royal Exhibition Building, following a successful showing at Cipriani Wall Street in New York in 2016, the first time it had been staged outside of London since its inception in 2002.
The move is part of an ongoing strategy to make The World's 50 Best Restaurants truly global, with Australia emerging as a serious food destination – both René Redzepi of Noma (number five on The World's Best Restaurants 2016 list) and Heston Blumenthal of former number one The Fat Duck and Dinner by Heston Blumenthal (number 45) having recently taken up residencies there.
Ahead of the official awards ceremony some chefs have already been selected for special awards, which they will collect infront of an audience on 5 April. Ana Ros from Slovenia has been named as the World's Best Female Chef 2017, while Heston Blumenthal has been recognised for his services to the industry with the Diner's Club Lifetime Achievement Award 2017 and Disfrutar restaurant in Barcelona has been picked as the recipient of the Miele One to Watch Award.
The Melbourne Food and Wine Festival will align its program with the event, it has also been announced.
The World's 50 Best Restaurants 2016 belonged to Massimo Bottura and his Modena restaurant Osteria Francescana, which was named World’s Best Restaurant for the first time, having ranked second in 2015 and third in both 2014 and 2013.
