Vicky Lau has been named Asia’s Best Female Chef as part of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants programme sponsored by S. Pellegrino & Acqua Panna.
Lau is chef and owner of the Tate Dining Room in Hong Kong but her entry into the world of restaurants was far from traditional after leaving a career in advertising to follow her passion for food.
She opened the Tate Dining Room in 2012 after training at the Sépage restaurant in Hong Kong. Originally trained as a graphic designer in New York, Lau utilises her visual presentation skills in creating ‘edible stories’ that take guests on a journey while they eat, something referred to as 'culinary expressionism' on the Tate website. You can see what that means in this video.
Speaking about the award, Lau said: “As an independent chef working in a very competitive environment, being named Asia’s Best Female Chef is a validation of the hard work I’ve put in. Having grown up in Hong Kong and educated in the West, I feel my work is infused with a variety of culinary influences and I am honoured that the respected industry experts voting on this award appreciate and recognise my efforts.”
The chef will be presented the Veuve Clicquot Asia’s Best Female Chef award at Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants ceremony on March 9th in Singapore.
