Step over bacon, it seems there’s a new food contender in town and it’s going by the name of potato salad. Yes, it seems potato salad has hit its stride, climbed to the top of mojo mountain, like Stallone in Rocky III, and sat, contently looking down on the lesser deserving ingredients of the wolrd, such as the ex-champ of cult foods, in this case, bacon.
Why has potato salad, which has to be the least salady salad around, all of a sudden started trending across the web? And why on earth has a Kickstarter campaign to make potato salad managed to raise one internet joker nearly $60,0000?
It all started when user Zack Danger Brown from Ohio started his crowd funding campaign with the simple call to action: “Basically I'm just making potato salad, I haven't decided what kind yet.” This half joke, perhaps even genius stroke of marketing, opened a door to the internet that no one could have imagined.
In just four days Brown has raised $44,000 with a range potato salad themed offers for potential investors. Bids range from as low as $1 - ensuring brown thanks you online and says your name out loud while making the recipe - to as high as $3000 which will ensure Brown, in his owns words, “will rent out a party hall and invite the whole internet to the potato salad party”.
The goals cover a whole range of ludicrous proposals such as a special $250 pledge that will ensure Brown opts for “better mayonnaise”. It all sounds absolutely mental until you realise this is very real and that over 4,500 people have already pledged money to the campaign, including over 500 people who gave him $35 or more.
It seems that Brown’s final words, “the internet loves potato salad! Let's show them that potato salad loves the internet”, have acted as somewhat of a call to potato arms. Can bacon ever come back from this? Could it possibly find a way to exist within the salad? Brown hasn’t even posted a recipe yet so there’s no clue as to what will make the final dish. With 24 days still to go on the campaign who knows what sort of heights it’s heading for.
