The Italian Space Agency, not content with just having astronaut meals prepared by Davide Scabin onboard their shuttles, have teamed up with a number of companies to develop the first espresso maker for space.
Until now the idea of a freshly brewed espresso was a dream in space as the pressurised capsules and the tech needed to kick out a zero gravity coffee just were’t available.
Step in the ISSpresso machine which on top of making fresh espresso can also brew cafe caffè lungo and other hot beverages such as tea.
The diagram below shows exactly how the machine works, replacing the usual plastic pipping found in coffee machine with steel that can withstand large amounts of pressure.
One small step for man, one giant leap for sleepy astronauts on the early morning shift.
