Born in Berlin in 1969, Jan Kornstaedt is an Hamburg based food and lifestyle photographer: after studying communication design at the University of Essen, he now works for major agencies and editorial clients.
Fine Dining Lovers asked Jan Kornstaedt few questions to know something more about his life and work, together with his relationship with food.
What’s the first taste you remember?
Probably raw carrot or cabbage turnip, as a child I loved to steal raw veggies from my mother while she was trying to prepare lunch.
How started the passion for photography dedicated to food and its forms?
Eating food is an everyday experience and yet highly personal one at the same time. It is an expression of your personality and cultural tribe. You can learn so much about people while inspecting their dining tables.
An anecdote about your work with food?
I'm a big fan of Japanese culture and Japanese food: in Haruki Murakami's novels food always plays an important role. When the main character prepares a meal he gets so descriptive I get really drawn in, it’s like watching a movie...
The fine dining place where you would take someone special?
There is this amazing new restaurant which serves contemporary German cuisine, it's very small and cosy: Das Lila Nashorn (The Purple Rhino) in Hamburg.
The dish to die for?
Don't make me choose! Its such a hard question to answer - right now I'd love a Tempura Soba (Japanese noodle soup).
