Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2014 is over with chef David Thompson from the Nahm restaurant in Bangkok, Thailand, taking the number one spot. He was followed by last year’s winner and the current Best Restaurant in Japan, Yoshihiro Narisawa's Les Créations de Narisawa. Third place on the night went to the Gaggan restaurant, Bangkok, Thailand with chef Gaggan Anand.
Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants, sponsored by S.Pellegrino and Acqua Panna, ceremony took place at the Capella hotel in Singapore with a VIP group of journalists, critics, jury members and chefs in attendance for the live announcement.
Thompson, originally from Australia, is regarded as one of the leading culinary figures in regards to Thai cuisine. His original restaurant, Nahm, in London was the first Thai restaurant to be awarded a Michelin star with his second space, Nahm in Bangkok, picked as the Best Restaurant in Asia. His approach to Thai cooking involves rediscovering old techniques and recipes and bringing them back to life with a genuine focus on authenticity.
Speaking after the ceremony, Thompson said: “To be honest I'm really quite surprised. I bet against myself. I honestly thought I'd dropped out", the chef then went on to discuss his team, adding: “I’ve lost a bet and it's going to take me six months to take all of them out on their parties."
