The Japanese are famous for their gorgeous origami, the art of folding paper into decorative figures. It seems the latest trend in food art is to apply origami techniques to orange peels.
Flexible, sturdy and durable, orange peels can be twisted easily into various shapes to make Mikan art (named after the Japanese word for mandarin oranges). While Mikan art may seem new to the West, it has been practiced for quite a while in Japan, Design Taxi reports.
Check out some of the fantastic creations made with orange peel below. If you are interested in trying your hand at it, you can always turn to Atarashii Mikan no Mukikata (New Ways to Peel a Mikan), a Mikan art manual containing 25 diagrams with instructions.
