If you ever thought the people typing away on their laptops at Starbucks were just show offs, you are in for a surprise. It turns out the noise level at coffee shops may actually boost creativity.
Researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign found that complete silence isn't conducive to creativity and that loud noise can be too distracting and irritating, according to the New York Times.
Participants in the study were asked to brainstorm ideas in rooms with different levels of noise. Researchers found that 70 decibels, the average noise level of coffee shops, was the magic number for enhancing creativity.
Next time you're stuck on an idea, you have a pretty good excuse for going out for coffee or head on over to Coffivitiy, a website that mimics coffee house chatter.
