Milan’s Design Week 2012 is just beginning but one of the first observations visitors can make is that food and conviviality are becoming more recurrent among the lovers of design.
TOM DIXON'S MOST
For instance, British designer Tom Dixon set up a hub for the freshest ideas in communication, food, culture, design and the digital industrial revolution. The communication hub is located at his Most exhibition inside the Science Museum of Milan. Participants of the hub include Carpigiani Gelato University which hosts 'Design your own gelato': a playful workshop that allows visitors to design their own ice-cream. The guided lessons from expert ice-cream makers take place three times per day.
Dixon's Most exhibit is also the home of Spring Table, one of design week’s most anticipated pop-up restaurants. The restaurant was conceived by Tom Dixon and is run by Dock Kitchen’s award-winning chef Stevie Parle. Located at the suggestive 18th cloisters of the Science Museum, it is decorated with Tom Dixon furniture. Spring Table serves delicate British dishes but also Italian ingredients in an extremely suggestive open-air location, operating for both lunch and dinner.
ITALIAN FOOD INSPIRED CERAMICS
A bit further is the Brera district, where at the DaDA EAST gallery, in Via Varese 12, a collective of Italian artisans exposes a series of handmade ceramics (often inspired by food) under the common name Segno Italiano. The collective also organizes food shows for the visitors, in the afternoons of design week.
WALLPAPER* HANDMADE
Last but not least, Tuesday 17th was the opening party of Wallpaper* Handmade exhibition at Brioni’s headquarters in Via Santo Spirito. Food was present among the magazine’s selection of artisanal, eclectic objects spanning from technology to fine printing. Wallpaper’s food selection includes some rare finds like Marou Chocolates, an artisanal chocolate maker from Vietnam characterized by an ultra-luxurious packaging and the most eclectic chocolate combinations, plus a Pop-up Popcorn project, available for visitors to taste. The exhibition is going to stay open for the public during the whole design week.
