It has been 100 years since the Titanic sank and the ship still holds a special place in history. For the past century, many have tried to piece together the events that lead up to the tragic voyage and its aftermath. The Titanic has inspired novels, a famous film, and even chefs who have created masterpieces inspired by the sunken vessel.
These and other memories are being honored at the new Titanic Visitor Center (in the picture above), which was inaugurated in Belfast earlier this month on the ocassion of the tragedy's centennial. Belfast plays an important role in the Titanic's history as it is where the doomed ship was built back in 1911. The sleekly designed six-story center recounts the Titanic's story - from its glorious origins to its last night at sea.
The Titanic struck an iceberg while traveling full speed during her voyage across the Atlantic Ocean the night of April 14, 1912. The chaos that ensued has been the stuff of legends for the past century: the last supper on the ship; the messages of distress sent from the sunken vessel; the misfortune of the poor, who were left aboard the sinking ship while first-class passengers jumped on life boats; the myths that followed the tragedy; and the help that arrived too late.
