Ilustrator and graphic designer David Meldrum, set himself an unusual artistic culinary challenge: to illustrate everything he ate and drank, every day, for a year. The result is The Food Illustrator , a project inspired by David’s interest in collections, packaging and reportage drawing. It acts not only as a record of one man’s culinary intake over a year, but also as an historical record of today’s food-related trends, packaging, design and typography.
He chose to use acrylic, watercolour, collage, pen and ink, illustrating the food and drink sometimes in its raw form, or as it appeared on the plate, but often in its packaging. He produced his work taking a digital photo of everything he ate and drunk and keeping any pagaging: and the end of each day he worked on the illustration using the packaging and the pictures.
Curious about David's diet? In 365 days he's eaten - and drawn - 15 fried breakfast, 91 bowls of porridge, 8 packs of sushi, 29 bananas or 122 chocolate bars. He's drunk 1360 cups of coffee, 305 pints of beer and sometimes few glasses of champagne.
In our photogallery you can find just a selection of David Meldrum's illustration: The Royal Wedding Menu, his Christmas meal and even the last illustration representing what he at at Jamie Oliver's Cambridge restaurant.
