The news won’t be official until the final signature, but chef Ferran Adrià has already given his consent: the story of elBulli will be the subject of a Hollywood feature film.
According to reports from The Telegraph, the predicted budget will be around 40 million dollars, the same amount used to make The Social Network, which Ferran Adrià suggested as a possible inspiration for the script, a movie that hits halfway between reality and fiction.
The only condition that Adrià has imposed on the project, according to the Catalan News Agency, is that the film be based on the stories gathered by Time’ Magazine journalist Lisa Abend in Spain, which were published in the book The Sorcerers Apprentices, a Season in the Kitchen at Ferran Adrià’s elBulli: a glimpse into the daily life behind the doors of the Catalan restaurant through the lives of some of the cooks and trainees that have worked there. Every year, 30 people create the elBulli brigade, for a total of around 1,000 young chefs at the stoves, working under the great chef for 14 hours a day.
The names of potential directors or the cast members are still top secret, but at the presentation of the Spanish edition of the book in Barcelona, Lisa Abend joked about the possibility of Johnny Depp playing Adrià. The producer Jeff Kleeman explained that the shooting would be taking place between 2012 and 2013, while the restaurant is closed to the public, and the film’s release would be in 2014, when elBulli would re-open as a Foundation. After all, the show must go on.
