Taiwanese People Change Names to 'Salmon' for All-You-Can-Eat Sushi

Taiwan officials have urged people to stop changing their name to ‘salmon’ in order to take advantage of a restaurant promotion in the country.

In a debacle dubbed ‘salmon chaos’, by local media, young people rushed to officially change their name to include the characters 'Gui Yu' - the Chinese characters for salmon - in order to take advantage of a promotion at a well-known restaurant chain.

The promotion stated that anyone who could present an ID card with the 'Gui Yu' characters would receive a free all-you-can-eat sushi meal with five friends.

It led to a rush of about 150 mostly young people, rushing to officially change their names to include ‘salmon’, angering officials who denounced it as a waste of resources.

Taiwan allows its citizens to change their name up to three times, however, people took advantage of the rule in order to game the system. It resulted in some Taiwanese now being officially called 'Salmon Prince', 'Meteor Salmon King' and 'Salmon Fried Rice'.

Local media reported that the people are not planning on remaining 'Salmon Prince' forever, but instead will change their name back as soon as the promotion ends.

The United Daily News reported on one resident who added a record 36 new characters to his name, most of them seafood themed, including the characters for ‘crab’ and ‘lobster’.
