Heston Blumenthal has launched a new Mediterranean-influenced gin, aptly named Lazy Sunshine Gin, best served with a drizzle of olive oil to give it body and bring out its aromas.
The new supermarket gin sold through British retailer Waitrose offers a herbaceous take on the ever-popular spirit, drawing on flavours inspired by Heston’s trips to the south of France as a teenager.
Speaking about the new creation, the UK chef, who's always one for culinary experimentation, says : "Open this bottle and what do you smell? Basil, rosemary, thyme, lavender and juniper. For me, those aromas are Provence in a glass – the place that first inspired me to be a chef. And how will I be drinking it in the lazy sunshine? With the addition of a little olive oil to give it body and intensity. Try it – you’ll like it. Santé."
John Vine, spirits buyer at Waitrose, says: "This gin is exceptional - delicious and aromatic on its own, but also amazing with a drizzle of good-quality olive oil over the top ... The olive oil brings out all of these flavours, making it a show-stopping cocktail to have as an aperitif, while enjoying the late summer sunshine in the garden."
Blumenthal is well known for his culinary chemistry, but it appears olive oil and mixology have been unusual bed fellows for some time.
The 'Heston from Waitrose' Lazy Sunshine Gin (£25/70cl) is now on sale.
