Anyone who's seen that uncomfortable scene in The Lonely Guy when Steve Martin gets ushered to his table for one under a spotlight in front of a packed and restaurant stunned into silence might have been daunted by the social awkwardness of dining alone, until now!
Since social distancing measures have become the norm in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, restaurants have been re-inventing themselves in any number of creative ways and dining along now counts as one of them!
"Bord för en" is the new solo dining experience offered by a couple in Sweden that turns that table for one into solitary pleasure. The brain child of Linda Karlsson and her husband Rasmus Persson, who had the idea after serving elderly parents out of the window, are going to town opening of their new one-seater restaurant located in the middle of a field in Ransäter, Sweden.
The website reads; 'One table. One chair. Right in the middle of a Swedish summer field. Bord för en is a solo dining experience. No waiter. No other guests. Just your inner conversation and a three course meal – delivered in a rope operated basket.'
The menu, created by former professional chef Persson, starts with an appetizer of Swedish style potato pancakes (Råraka) served with vegan kelp caviar, dill and sour cream. The main dish is a carrot and ginger puree, with hazelnut butter and sweet corn croquettes and as a dessert, blueberries soaked in gin, buttermilk ice cream and crushed sugar and viola flowers called Last days of summer. All will be served in a picnic basket sent down a rope with the help of an old bicycle wheel.
Joel Söderbäck, founder of numerous award-winning bars in Stockholm, including Tjoget, one of the World’s 50 Best Bars in 2019 is on drinks serving up mocktails made with seasonal ingredients such as elderflower and strawberries.

To ensure maximum safety, Linda and Rasmus will wait six hours before cleaning and disinfecting the table and chair and will wash the dishes used by the customer twice, ready to host the next guest.
There isn't a price on doing alone with each customer being asked to decide how much to pay. "For us, this is the ideal concept for eating," said Linda in an interview. "No social distraction from taste, just you and your food."
The restaurant will be open from 10 May to 1 August for a three-course breakfast, lunch or dinner available from 10 a.m. to 10:45 p.m.
Bookings are available via their website.
