Just finished Veganuary and feeling lost? Well, you don’t have to move on to a new monthly commitment quite yet, especially if you are based in Hong Kong. There is a new app that will now pay you whenever you eat plant-based meals.
It’s called Pay-a-Vegan, an app is giving its users US$1 for each vegan meal they eat in the form of credits to be used at partnered restaurants.
The founder, Eiko Onishi, wants the app to encourage more restaurants to offer vegan food and to give vegans recommendations on where they can eat. By doing so, the app basically connects the restaurants with vegan options with its vegan audience.

It works by a user uploading the receipt of the vegan meal they ate to the app, whereby they will receive US$1 to be redeemed in the app's partner restaurants.
Hong Kong is known to have one of the highest meat consumptions per capita in the world at 664g/day/capita, according to a research paper by the University of Hong Kong. Pork and beef consumption are the highest, with average daily consumption four times higher than the UK.
The same paper had recommended the citizens of Hong Kong to adopt a more plant-based diet in order to achieve significant levels of reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
