A Wisconsin Cheese company is releasing a batch of very rare 20-year old cheddar cheese for sale in May and it will cost $209 per pound.
Hook’s Cheese Co. of Mineral Point, Wis. has previously sold only one batch of the 20-year-aged cheddar before, in 2015 and the cheese sold out in just a few days.
Cheddar cheese has been making headlines around the globe after chef Marc Veyrat sued the Michelin Guide for allegedly downgrading his restaurant Maison des Bois, from three to two stars based on an inspector’s claim that he used cheddar cheese in his soufflé. The case became known as ‘Cheddar Gate’.
While the chef said he has nothing against cheddar, he insisted that the claim was false and that it showed incompetence on the Michelin Guide inspector’s part. His case was dismissed by a French court last month, but the chef has vowed to fight on.
Cheddar, however, has a loyal following and this is no ordinary cheddar. Company owner Tony Hook taste-tests the cheese during its two-decade-long ageing process and confirms that this batch tastes similar to the hugely successful 2015 cheese - “Very smooth, nice clean flavour,” he said.
As last time, half the profits from the sale of the cheese will be donated to the Dairy Innovation Hub at the University of Wisconsin and the batch will go on sale on May 23rd.
